Art Bio

“Walking the line of science and history, my work endeavors to reconcile questions about existence. I create sculptural work using original techniques with leather, detailed with found materials. I invent structures that are biological in essence but speak directly to divine energy. The goal of each piece: convey an understanding of the validity of science and the unseen energies. Biological patterns and cross-section like designs were first born out of numerous inspections of my father’s medical books, are interwoven with references from the natural world. Historical themes stem from my love of storytelling, the history of earthly objects, and my degree in the study of anthropology.

I breathe life into constructed components; transforming the new and discarded in order to transport the viewer into a new world. I save 85% of my waste: leather scraps & experimental shapes, incorporating them into each work; what I call art composting. My interests involve experimenting with the re-creation of specific biological cells, diseases & anatomy tied to the African diaspora. I am interested in re-creating small-scale cellular and anthropomorphic shapes, combining these ‘studies’ into larger undecipherable forms; with the goal of linking the subject of race, with biology, spiritual energies, & the universe.” – Alicia Piller

Sarah Sokol Millinery

ABOUT SARAH

Sarah Sokol received her BFA in Interior Design at Pratt Institute and spent three years designing commercial kitchens for clients like Alex Stupak, the Meatball Shop and Andre Balasz. However, inspired by the creativity of the Burning Man Community, Sarah set out to strike a balance between her lifelong love of fashion with her training in design.

Sarah Sokol Millinery

Sarah Sokol wearing her Derby Day Horsehair Feather Mohawk. Photographed for the New York Times by Fred R. Conrad and featured in the July 12, 2015 issue.

When Sarah went to Burning Man for the first time, she discovered the limitlessness of the imagination and a desire to create quality headpieces which expressed her inner self as well. Having been further inspired by Anya Caliendo’s work, Sarah went to study under the milliner in her Advanced Couture Millinery course. There, she learned detailed techniques of couture millinery; techniques she practices today in her studio. Taking two dimensional materials and creating a sculptural statement to be worn on top of a human head became the most amazing challenge to Sarah — both structurally and creatively.

Sarah Sokol Millinery

“I had this passion flowing through me and wasn’t sure what to do with it.”

“I went to a bookstore to browse and came across a book called Couture Hats. The second I opened the book I knew this is what I was meant to do. I fell in love with the imagination of the best couture milliners in the world. Every page I flipped through made me see clearer and clearer that this is what I need to do.” -Sarah Sokol

Art Bio

Alicia has had an interest in the arts since her childhood, in the ‘Trash Room’ at the Chicago Children’s Museum is one of the earliest places Alicia was initiated into the practice of art making. Much of the diversity in Alicia’s present artwork is from influences as a child. Born to one African American, and one Jewish parent – exposure to the world, her themes of nature and the cosmos, and other influences can be traced directly back to a wealth of childhood experiences. By 17, she was already in tune with her creative intuition, erecting a magnitude of work stretching beyond kid-friendly debris of the Children’s Museum. She was a participant in Gallery 37 a Youth Arts program for over five years, and was involved in a number of arts and science programs for gifted students.  Alicia received her B.A. from Rutgers University for studies in both Anthropology and Fine Arts with a focus on painting. After graduating Alicia relocated to New York City to pursue a career as a professional artist. In her first year out of college Alicia started the business Designs by Alicia P which began with selling her own: hand-painted clothing & paintings but eventually grew to be an entire line of Jewelry designs each one hand made and based on her interests in anthropology, and with a roots in sculptural work.

Over the ten years that Alicia has run her own business, she has honed and perfected her unique style of art using suede leather, found objects, and other mixed media to create jewelry, wall hangings and now large format sculptures. Alicia has participated in a countless number of exhibitions including juried shows in New York and Chicago, as well as an invitational exhibition in London. In 2013 she was recognized by several arts funding organizations, and her work has been featured in major studio films, television programs, print, & digital media outlets.

Currently, Alicia is expanding her signature aesthetic now focusing on combining her creative modalities into one multi-sensory experience in the form of sculpture and installation work. In 2015, Alicia is excited to have been invited to travel to India to participate in the Art Castle International Art Residency. Alicia continues to exhibit her work regularly as well as designing custom work for private clients.

Welcome Liane By Design – HAND WOVEN WIRE JEWELRY
YING YANG IS THE ESSENTIAL BALANCE IN LIFE. THE BEAUTY OF COMBINING TWO OPPOSITE POLES INTO ONE MAGICAL STATE.
WEAVING RIGID, STATIC GOLD AND SILVER INTO FLUID, ETHEREAL OBJECTS OF ADORNMENT IS THE ESSENCE OF MY DESIGNS

Liane By Design

I have always loved art and craft. Whether I made it, bought it or viewed it, the creation of handmade design and ornamentation is a process that is a key part of me being Me.

And while my designs are not made using traditional metallurgic processes, it is a technique that combines two great artisanal crafts: textile hand weaving and jewelry making, creating a totally unique look. Each stitch is as caringly done by hand, as a textile weaver would do at a loom or a jeweler would at a workbench.

I find inspiration from periods of the past: Baroque, Renaissance, Victorian and combine it with contemporary ideas to create jewelry with singular beauty that transcend time. The magical joining of opposites–Ying Yang.

Liane By Design Liane By Design Moondance GF EmeraldLiane By DesignTINSEL 14KT Gold-filled Necklace:
I make my jewelry with fine gauge precious wire. I string the pearls and crystals on the wire first, then drop them in position as I hand weave the wire around a wood hand loom. This technique makes the pearls look like they are suspended in a cocoon of gold or silver.
My jewelry has a look of delicate beauty–like raindrops on rose petals or tinsel tossed on a tree.
